5 Tech Tools to Keep You Safe at College

August 22nd, 2011

This story was posted on Fox News website.  Besides the tools listed below we sell a package of products in our Extreme College Survival Kit that contain most of the items listed in the story below.

Summer is coming to an end.

And for most college-bound students that means you’re heading back to the dorms.

According to the most recent U.S crime statistics there were about 4700 robberies, 5000 aggravated assaults, 3300 forcible sex offences and 31 murders on college campuses in 2009.

So while students and parents pack up their caravans with X-long twin bedding and plastic storage boxes don’t forget to include these new high tech tools to keep you and your belongings safe and protected this semester.

1 – Lock it Up

Dorm buildings are a perfect setting for socializing and getting to know your new dorm-mates, but unfortunately this often compels students to keep their doors open and unlocked.

You don’t have to be antisocial to keep your things safe; buying a great safe can give you the security you need.

The Diversion Book safe: At first glance, it looks like another book for class, but in fact, it’s really a safe with a lock. It’s small enough that it won’t take up too much space and disguised just right for a skillful crook to overlook.

The Hidden Closet safe: A safe that blends into your closet. It looks like a regular shirt you place on a hanger only this shirt zips down to unveil 9 pockets to hold anything from cash to expensive jewelry.

“The campus thief is looking for a quick hit and will first go to your desk and dresser. The key to making these devices work is to keep them your secret. Don’t tell anyone about them, not even your best friend,” Steve Kardian, a school safety and security expert, told FoxNews.com.

2 – Keep armed and undercover at all times

On college campuses nearly 20% of women will be victims of an attempted or actual sexual assault, as will about 6% of men. Though colleges across the country have improved their campus security, crime rates still remain high.

Carrying a personal protection device is a great way to keep you prepared at all times.

Pepper Spray-Perfume/Lipstick: This discreet pepper spray looks like a perfume or lipstick holder, but in reality it holds Oleoresin Capsicum, an ingredient that has been used for years as an effective self defense tool.

“This is a great concept,” Ken Wisnefski , tech expert and founder of Webimax told FoxNews.com. “Many women like to carry pepper spray around but usually have them dangling from their key chains. At least if a woman is being attacked they can pull out their lipstick and create the element of surprise.”

With any self defense device, it is still important to practice and be familiar with how it works and to keep it accessible.

3 – Don’t fall victim to identity theft

Safeguarding your personal and financial information is probably not the #1 thing on every college students mind. According to a Javelin Strategy & Research study young adults are less likely to monitor their bank accounts regularly and are the least likely to take advantage of monitoring programs offered by financial institutions.

Living in a dorm where other students or strangers can easily access your room leaves your computer and personal information exposed and unprotected.

The Prey Project App: With its powerful report system this free app keeps track of your laptop and helps recover it if stolen. It can even catch the thief in action by automatically snapping a picture through your webcam.

It will also remotely lock down your PC to prevent further access to your private files. “Guarding one’s personal information is critical, and this application is one way for tech-savvy college students to protect the info they have stored digitally on their laptops,” Patrick Fiel, a public safety advisor for ADT services, told FoxNews.com.

“The most fundamental lesson is to keep all your passwords private, diversified, and to change them often,” recommended Fiel.

4 – Personal Safety System via a Smartphone

Walking alone across campus or to your car in an empty lot leaves any student vulnerable to an attacker.

MyForce: A personal security service on your smartphone.

This app keeps your screen from timing out so with one touch you can send an alert out to a live security monitoring team. Once alerted, MyForce supplies emergency response units with the student’s exact location, physical description and any medical conditions they may have.

“This is a great idea, allowing people with one touch of a button, to call for help and have authorities track their location immediately. All families and campuses should review and consider this service,” Alison Rhodes, CEO of Safety Mom told FoxNews.com

MyForce also automatically starts an audio recording of the incident so the monitoring team can confirm the incident and report any additional details coming from the recording.

5 – Multi-purpose activation alarms

To get ahead in school you must multi-task. You juggle your school work and social life to get the most out of your college experience.

Keeping yourself safe at school requires the same strategy.

Multi-function Keychain Alarm: This personal alarm can be carried in your hand or attached to a laptop or backpack.

Pumped with a 120 Decibel alarm that activates when the metal trigger pin is pulled, the extreme blast of sound will send any attacker or invader running.

Additionally, it comes with tweezers you can place into your dorm room door or window to detect an intruder. When the contacts separate, the alarm sounds off.

“I like the door stop alarms they prevent intruder entries through inward opening doors. They will startle and scare off intruders and wake you to take action,” David Nance, a personal safety expert told FoxNews.com.

Practical Self Defense – Why Buy Pepper Spray?

August 14th, 2011

Nowadays, you can’t be too sure that you are safe in the streets, especially at night. Cases of robbery, rape and violence has been increasing for the past years. You can have peace of mind if you are equipped with the right self defense tools. A popular and effective example of such weapon is the pepper spray. To buy pepper spray for you or your loved ones is a perfect gift and investment.

Now, what’s in these pepper sprays and how do they work? The content of this weapon causes irritation, pain, discomfort, swelling and nausea to the target. Capsaicin is very potent in irritating the mucus membranes, particularly those in the eyes and the nose. When it gets contact with the eyes, it induces tears and pain and the target’s eyelids involuntarily shut. The substance also permeates the skin, causing severe pain and burning sensation.

The effects can last up to an hour, giving enough time to escape or disable the assailant. Pepper sprays do not cause death or permanent damages.

Most of the sprays available in the market have their main component derived from strong chili peppers. The key component is called capsaicin, which gives chili its distinctive hot taste. Capsaicin is not naturally soluble in water but emulsifiers are used to suspend the substance in water. The canisters are pressurized so that it can be fired forcefully in aerosol form. You should buy spray that has at least 3 million SHUs to guarantee its effectiveness against your assailant.

Many people buy pepper spray because it is effective but not as expensive as stun guns and electric batons. They are also pretty simple to use. Simply remove the safety lock, aim the nozzle to the face of the target and press the button.

Even the smallest canisters at around 1/2 ounce can support 6-10 one second bursts. A second’s burst is more than enough to actually disable a target. Capsaicin is also effective in defending against animal attackers. Most varieties are tested to work against aggressive bears and dogs. The spray also won’t cause permanent damage to these animals.

You can buy pepper spray from us and order it through the internet. They are available in different sizes, ranging from 1/2 ounce to 9 ounce canisters. If you will just be using it for personal defense, just buy a small one. They can simply be slipped in your bag and pocket, or you can use it as a keychain.

Stun Gun for self-defense

August 12th, 2011

Self-defense is essential to survive a dangerous situation. You can protect yourself when there is a need for it. This should be your priority, especially when you still want to live. You can be the victim even when you are home alone. There are also cases of crimes, while at work. Crimes can happen anywhere. This is a fact. This must give you reason to be prepared and be alert at all times.

It is very important to report on options for ensuring security. Many people choose to learn to do martial arts. Those who are rich and famous to hire bodyguards to keep them safe. You can choose to carry a gun in self defense. You have plenty of options. Try to consider what you need and want so that you get the best option. Check if it is effective and safe.

The stun gun is considered one of the safest self-defense today’s devices. You can choose to wear the device for personal protection. The security level of the tool is tested by measuring the amperage. That discharges of electrical current that is located in the lower and safer. It causes no damage to vital organs. Causes no damage to the heart or a person with a pacemaker.

This device also has a special switch design. It has a safety lock to prevent accidental activation. You can be sure to avoid inadvertently striking yourself, even when put into your pocket. This is one of the concerns that may make you hesitate to use it. The security features blocking, low amperage, you feel sure that a device is safe for your personal use. Other than that, it is a secure its objective, since it causes no permanent damage.

The temporal effects of this safety include immobilization and confusion. These effects occur when electrical currents in the device interrupt the normal transmission of signals in the neuromuscular system. The muscles of the body experience spasms that result in incapacitation for a moment. This temporary interruption of normal body functions is the main reason why the device is considered effective for self defense. It gives you the opportunity to escape danger.

Many states allow its use as it is considered as non-lethal. Just take responsibility when you are in possession of a weapon. Find out about specific state laws for use. Meet all requirements for you to take advantage of the device. It is best to know the policies regarding their use so they do not face possible sanctions.

The stun gun is in fact one of the safest self-defense weapons today. It has characteristics that make it a very safe device to use. You can have as your personal security device.

Woman Uses Stun Gun to Defend Against Attacker

August 12th, 2011

We normally don’t read in the news about someone using a Stun Gun to defend their self.  Normally it’s the read about the police using it an unruly offender.

According to authorities, a woman was only able to escape her boyfriend when he attacked her by using a stun gun on him.

When police arrived at the address to respond to a domestic dispute they were confronted by the 36-year-old male. When he pointed the gun he was holding at them, police shot him. He was later taken to University Medical Center for treatment and later arrested.

According to the police report, the woman was in the apartment that was shared with the suspect. It was reported that he climbed in through a window before grabbing her hair and biting her. Escaping she ran outside, when the man knocked her to the ground, pounded her head into the concrete and subsequently choked her until she felt as if she was going to pass out.

The man is reported to have pulled out a handgun where he threatened to kill the woman and himself. However, before he was able to do so, the woman pulled out the self defense device and shocked him several times. When the man dropped the gun, the woman threw it away and ran.

In a situation such as this, the role of the stunning device was important in the safety of the woman in what could have produced different results if no stun gun was available.

Nowadays, more people are considering the self defense tools as a way of maintaining their protection. No one knows when they will become a target, but knowing that you have a form of defense on hand will mean that you are one step ahead at preventing such a situation from occurring.

Members of the public are not the only ones who have access to these tools, but also police departments. With a wide range of non-lethal tools on hand they are able to effectively do their job of protecting the public and themselves when the situation calls for it.

Thanks to the woman’s self defense device she was able to fight off her boyfriend as he attacked and threatened to kill her even though she could have passed out while he was choking her. A device that may not have received much use since it was bought, essentially saved her life from a man armed with a gun and the intent to kill. A small device that pack a powerful punch when it’s needed.

Electronic Barking Dog Deters Apartment from Robbery

August 4th, 2011

So, there’s this fairly old, but pretty nice apartment building in an area which has begun to slowly deteriorate in recent years. On the second floor is Mrs. Jones, an 80 year old lady who is very sweet and spends a lot of time doing puzzles and watching the game shows on television.

Mrs. Jones has a front door into the hallway, directly across from Sylvia, a 25 year old nurse, who frequently works 12 hour shifts at the hospital nearby. Sylvia has heard of a few stories from the neighbors of break-ins in the next building. She decides to buy an electronic barking dog, and sets it up right next to her front door. Mrs. Jones was asking Sylvia about it as she was setting it up, because she had the front door open, and the two ladies are friendly neighbors and they usually chit chat for a few minutes when they see each other.

What To Carry When You Can’t Carry Your Gun

July 27th, 2011

Concealed carry means more than just carrying your gun. Concealed carry also means carrying other self-defense tools. Everyone knows not to bring a knife to a gun fight but when you don’t have a gun there are other means to protect yourself. Here is a list of options you can carry when you can’t carry your gun.

Pepper Spray

I’m a huge fan of pepper spray. It is inexpensive, light, easy to conceal and immensely effective in disabling an attacker.  The active ingredient is usually capsaicin, which causes severe irritation to the eyes and impairs breathing. In plain and simple language, it burns a lot in your most vulnerable place, your eyes.

Why I like pepper spray: Because it causes an attacker to immediately cover his face. This leaves the attacker vulnerable to your counter-attack.

How to use it: First of all you have to know how your pepper spray works. Is it a stream or mist? From there you can determine the effective range. So piece of advice number one – spray something to see how your canister discharges.

Second: You need to know how to discharge the spray without looking at it directly. Learn to use it with your weak hand and practice. In a stressful situation you don’t have the luxury of learning how to work it and you can’t fumble around. Fumbling means you have to take your attention to the spray instead of the situation or you may drop it. Both actions embolden an attacker.

Third: Once you know the mechanics of the spray you need the courage to hold your ground until it is to be used. This is much harder than you think. My philosophy is to hide the spray until it is to be used and wait until the ultimate opportunity to strike. Spray as much as you can in one shot and deliver a punch or kick with everything you have inside of you to the attacker. Showing the spray as a show of force enables the attacker to know he has to change his tactics to attack you. He may attack or abandon the conflict but if he chooses to fight you will lose the element of surprise. What he will then do is rush you and take you down and once you are on the ground your focus will not be on trying to spray anyone.

Here is one more thing to consider. Pepper spray comes in very concealable modes. There are canisters that look exactly like lip-stick or ink-pens. I carry a pepper spray pen in my shirt pocket when I travel into Washington DC, although pepper spray is illegal in DC I still want it with me and it doesn’t attract any attention in my shirt pocket. Better to have it and not need is what I figure. Also, pepper spray is not too frowned upon in court because it is usually not considered an offensive weapon and it is nonlethal.
Stun Guns & Tasers

Blast1There is a big difference between stun guns and tasers. Stun guns have nodes that are attached to the unit and the electricity travels between the nodes. They do not ‘shoot’ electrical beams or fire lighting bolts (yes, people ask that all the time). Tasers fire two small electrodes up to a range of 15 feet. The nodes attach to the target and the electricity passes into the target.

In order to give them a fair test I was hit with a stun gun seven times: bare skin, t-shirts and a winter coat. The range of the voltage was 350,000 to 950,000. On bare skin it will leave a burn mark, and 350,000 volts will easily penetrate a heavy canvas insulated coat. What does it feel like? It hurts a lot and feels like a combination of a wasp sting, cigar burn and a surge of electricity all at once. It will not paralyze you like a taser will. In a fighting situation it will be impractical to hold a stun gun to someone’s body long enough to inflict a level of paralysis.

The most important defense aspect of a stun gun is intimidation. They are loud, especially indoors, and it sounds like a lot of static on steroids. Visually you can see the electrical arc and it is frightening. I offered one to an editor friend of mine at the NRA and he said “Mike, I probably have five guns in my car right now but I’ll tell ya, I’m afraid of that thing.” After showing people stun guns for many years, especially in an enclosed area the natural and immediate reaction is to put your arms close to your body and turn away as if to get away from it quickly.

There are a variety of configurations of stun guns. They come in about every size and shape from something about the size of a cigarette box to a walking cane to a device that looks like a cell phone or flashlight.  One unique model is the “Blast Knuckles” and it holds like brass knuckles with finger loops and discharges where your fist would strike. There is little chance of dropping it or having it removed from your hand.

It seems all creatures fear electricity. One use I had not expected is warding off aggressive dogs. While walking my dog in rural areas you are often charged by aggressive dogs. One particular mean beast came at me hard and when he was about ten feet away I pointed the stun gun toward him and gave a quick blast and he tucked his tail, got low to the ground and crawled away. I never hit him but just the fear factor is enough to turn away the meanest of dogs.

Prices range from about $35 to $100 depending on the voltage and configuration. Battery life is long – I’ve had the same batteries in stun guns for years and used them often and never changed the batteries.

Tasers run in the $300+ price range. The upside of a taser is that it will immobilize and assailant as long as you keep the current flowing. The down side is, for the most part, you only have one shot. So if you don’t get a solid hit, or you miss, it won’t do you much good. They are relatively bulky and difficult to conceal. But if you need to put someone down and keep them down taser will do the job.

Collapsible Batons

Baton1A baton will easily break a forearm or shatter a knee cap. Most importantly it extends your reach so you can hit an attacker without fear of being hit first. The only way you can block a blow from a baton is with the palm of your hand and there is a good chance you will still have a broken bone.

Batons are very easy to deploy. It only takes a flick of the wrist to extend it from the collapsed position. From the standpoint of intimidation if you walk toward someone and extend the baton it will be frightening – it shows you have a weapon and know how to use it – which is half the battle, and the potential assailant has to think twice about having made you a target.

The cost ranges from $21 for sixteen inch generic baton to $130 for a twenty-six in version from a name brand. I tested the sixteen inch generic and it is impressive. It weighs in, and this is my guess, at about 12 ounces and has enough heft so you feel like you have a piece of steel. The weight is in the front end which increases the striking power. This is one of the smallest batons but it fits nicely in a pocket, or a boot holster or glove compartment.

To close a baton just hit the business on the ground vertically and it will collapse into the handle.
Arm yourself with pepper spray in your weak hand and a baton in your strong hand and you have a combination that can take on any assailant that is not armed with a gun with 100% confidence. And you can do this for about $40.

Summation

There is a good reason law enforcement carries pepper spray, electrical devices and batons and you should consider adding them to your battery of self-defense products. They are inexpensive and effective on man or beast. A lot of CCW permit holders scoff at carrying something other than a gun but when you can’t carry, it’s a viable alternative for protection. Another aspect is if you have a family member that doesn’t carry at least you can equip them with something for defense. There are approximately 2.8 rapes for each 1,000 people which translates to 840,000 per year in the USA and it is estimated that 60% of rapes go unreported.

Use everything you can to protect yourself, your family and refuse to be a victim. Please use the comment section to provide advice to our community.

Peninsula burglar blinded by pepper-spray-toting mom

July 23rd, 2011

Here’s another case where having pepper spray saved the day.

————————————————————————————

A Peninsula mom used pepper spray to scare off a burglar from her home Thursday afternoon.

The mother was with her young daughter when she found the burglar in her bedroom closet around 2:50 p.m. The home was in the 3500 block of Bay Road in unincorporated Redwood City, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.

After he was found, the thief ran out of the closet and was met with the mom’s pepper-spray. The blinded burglar managed to crawl out a window and hop over a backyard fence.

A neighbor noticed a suspicious person in his yard and called 911. He told cops the suspect was holding his face.

Responding police found the intruder hiding under a tarp in the carport of the neighbor’s home, sheriff’s deputies said.

Edgar Aguiniga, 30, of East Palo Alto, arrested for burglary, possession of methamphetamine, and for a previous warrant for violating probation, sheriff’s deputies said.

San Mateo County woman repels would-be burglar with bear spray

July 22nd, 2011

We don’t necessarily recommend that you use Bear Spray on another person but at the same time we have to applaud this lady for standing firm and protecting herself and her property.

—————————————————

A San Mateo County woman used bear spray Thursday to stop a would-be burglar in his tracks, the sheriff’s office reported.

At about 2:50 p.m., the woman found a man hiding in the master bedroom closet of her home on the 3500 block of Bay Road, which is in an unincorporated area near Redwood City, according to the sheriff’s office.

She pulled out the animal repellent — a form of pepper spray — and doused the 30-year-old man, identified by the sheriff’s office as East Palo Alto resident Edgar Aguiniga.

Aguiniga allegedly dove out a window and climbed over the home’s backyard fence. Deputies later found the suspect and arrested him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Lakeview safety seminar offers tips to concerned residents

Lakeview safety seminar offers tips to concerned residents
by Kate Sosin, Windy City Times
2011-07-20
A July 12 CAPS (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) meeting that was expected to draw hundreds in Lakeview attracted so few people that police relocated it back to its original meeting space at the 23rd Dist. police community room.Slightly more than 30 people attended the CAPS safety seminar, an instructional two hours on street smarts facilitated by police. The meeting was to be held Inter-American Magnet School to accommodate the crowds expected in the wake of a July 3 stabbing that was videotaped.Despite a low turnout, most in attendance seemed to find the session with Sgt. Alex Silva, a veteran officer, time well spent.

Silva offered up a check list of common sense precautions that Chicagoans can take to protect themselves from crime and violence.

“Safety is something that a lot of people don’t think about until something happens,” he said.

According to Silva, awareness and avoidance are key. He cautioned against using cell phones and earbuds in the street or on public transportation, as doing so both distracts the user and calls attention to expensive electronics.

He also emphasized the importance of intuition about potentially dangerous situations.

People, he said, “don’t want to give in to what they think is paranoia.” However, that paranoia can be useful, he said. Those who recognize situations that make them uneasy and avoid them are far less likely to be made targets.

Silva said that many people are reluctant to react to their intuitions for fear of offending others, but that safety is more important than manners. However, he added, it is important to separate personal discomfort with actual illegal activity and threats before calling police.

“It’s not about what are they dressed like, what do they look like, but what do they do,” he said.

One man asked a question on many minds as of late: Is it illegal to loiter in a large group late at night?

No, said Silva. While groups are not allowed to block pedestrians, “anyone has a right to stand on any part of the sidewalk.”

If a group is doing something illegal, however, residents can always call police by dialing 911. If police are needed on scene, even for a non-emergency, residents should dial 911, not 311 said Silva.

Silva recommended that residents carry flashlights or pepper spray when traveling alone in dark places. He also advocated for the use of pepper spray over crime whistles, which he said are no more effective than yelling. He suggested testing pepper spray outdoors to get a feel for how it works. He also recommended carrying house keys on a lanyard, which can be swung at an oncoming attacker.

Whatever the reason, he said, “just don’t stop.” Stopping to offer the time or money or allowing people to slow you down, can have consequences as such simple requests can be bait. No matter what, he said, keep moving and appear confident. Stay alert and look around often.

Even when faced with a gun, Silva recommends running away immediately because, he said, it is hard to hit a moving target and many people do not use real guns in muggings.

Not all tactics will work in every situation. In the case of the videotaped July 3 stabbing in which one man was attacked by a large group, Silva said preparedness may only get one so far.

“When you have a group attacking you, I mean this advice is good, but I don’t know,” he said.

Clerk punches would-be robber, hits him with pepper spray

July 14th, 2011

A courageous clerk chased a possibly armed robbery from a Wood Village business and now the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help finding the suspect.

The suspect, described as a unknown-aged Caucasian man, entered the Dotty’s Deli at 2705 N.E. 238th Drive in Wood Village at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, July 10, and implied he had a gun in his jacket, said Lt. Steve Alexander, sheriff’s office spokesman.

Realizing the man was a robber, the clerk chased the suspect out of the store, punched the man and sprayed him with pepper spray as the suspect ran to his vehicle.

But wait, there’s more.

When the suspect managed to get into his vehicle – and appeared to be reaching under the seat for something – the clerk slammed the car door on the man’s leg several times before the suspect managed to escape in a white 1990’s Ford Explorer. The rear license plate was covered, obscuring it, Alexander added.

The suspect is described as 160 pounds, 5-foot-6-inches to 5-foot-7-inches tall, possibly with a beard or a full goatee.

Anyone with information on the suspect or the attempted robbery is asked to call the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 503-261-2847.

If the clerk was using one of our pepper sprays the crook would have red dye on his face making him easier to identify.
